R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril XII

Now that summer is over,* it's time for fall reading, and that means the R. I. P. Challenge!  This is the 12th year, and just like last year, Andi of Estella's Revenge and Heather of My Capricious Life  are hosting.

I'm going to sign up for Peril the Second: Read two books of any length that you believe fit within the challenge categories.

My main desire for this fall is to read one of the 'horrid novels' mentioned in Northanger Abbey.  Catherine and Isabella love their horrid novels, and they have a whole list.  Most of them were thought to be fictional titles made up by Miss Austen, but they turned out to be real, and now I have all of them in an ebook collection.  I'll just start at the beginning, with The Castle of Wolfenbach by Eliza Parsons, written in 1793.

I also have Jackaby (I am so behind the times) and a lovely Marvin Kaye collection, Masterpieces of Terror and the Unknown.  Who knows if I'll manage them all?

*In theory only; we are suffering an awful heat wave, the worst of the year.

  1. I haven't heard of the Marvin Kaye one but I love the cover and title. And Jackaby! Yay!

  2. I was thinking of doing that! Reading a horrid novel that is. But then I thought it would take too long and probably be a terrible waste of time, but you're doing it makes me change my mind back. Why not? It'll probably be fun! And painful. Probably really painful.

  3. Not heard of The Castle of Wolfenbach - looking forward to seeing what that one's about. For novels I've gone for The Nun by Diderot which I've actually already read, and the original horrid novel - The Castle of Ontranto - really looking forward to that one :) I've been looking out for Stephen King in various secondhand shops but they never have the ones I'm after. Would love to read Salem's Lot this autumn :)

  4. Great plan! I have that Marvin Kaye anthology and will probably pick at it for some Peril of the Short Story. Happy Spooky Reading!

  5. Well, so far I really like the Castle of Wolfenbach. Matilda is sensible and brave, so I like her. It's not at all a painful read.

I want to read Udolfo too; I did once, long long ago, but I have forgotten all except for what lies behind the horrid black veil.

I'm looking forward to the Kaye collection! I just got it (off the library donation table).

  6. Hooray! Hooray! RIP time is the most wonderful time of the year! Except for Christmas, I do actually love Christmas better, but RIP time is a pretty great time. I am going to get so many book reccccccs!

  9. Hallo, Hallo Jean!

I am finally able to start visiting again! *whew!* I hear you on the 'heat wave' insanity - our volcanic temps are driving me underground! Also, the lightning this year has been at a prime fixture of insanity, too! I've either been bounced off (connectivity woes) or left unplugged for more weeks/days this Summer than I care to admit! Bonking mad, I tell you! :(

I am wicked happy you posted about RIP! I've been trying to participate in this every year for 3 years - I keep missing it or join too late or something odd happens and I lose track of it! I'm going to work on a list and join you!

I love going through the portal of 'Cosy Horror' - as I fancy Psychological Suspense but I do like certain elements of the Horror genre but not overtly so! I've broached the topic on my blog for quite awhile now and look forward to continuing to explore it as it's a genre I coined to fill in a missing gap! :)

    *waves!*

  10. We've just had a thunderstorm ourselves, so I hope it helped with some of the fire trouble. I'm glad you'll be joining RIP as well! I also don't like straight-up horror, 'cosy horror' sounds pretty good to me....
