Hey, it's August!

I've been gallivanting around all summer and now it's almost over, and I am in no way prepared.  It's time to pull myself together, along with my house and my life.  But first, a few snippets:

How do people do these pictures?  Mine just looks funny.

I really had fun with the Comment Challenge in July!  My partner was the Literary Feline at Musings of a Bookish Kitty, and we had a grand time.  She is also a California person, but we live at opposite ends of the state.  Thanks to the Literary Feline for being a wonderful comment buddy! 


Now, I've joined up for August too, and my new partner is Esther at Chapter Adventures!  She has a lovely blog, so head over and check it out.  I'm looking forward to getting to know her, too.

The Classics Club Spin was due yesterday, and I did read my book, but I haven't written it up yet.  Look for that tomorrow, or maybe even today if I get really productive around the house.

I've been gone for a few days.  I took my kids out for one last summer hurrah, down to the Central Coast to visit my dear friend.  We went to the beach and ate lots of tri-tip and celebrated some birthdays, and stayed up really really late talking.  It was great!

    I'm very excited to get to know you too! :D Those pictures are lovely, it shows you and your family had a great time. I've never been to a bonfire, but it's definitely on my bucket list - it looks very cozy. Oh, and by the way, your picture doesn't look awkward at all, I just think that people go into crazy poses to get them to look a certain way hahah

    Esther, I think they must! Because I'm pretty sure I would have had to be flat on my back for it to work. A beach bonfire is wonderful! Ours had added excitement because the tide came up extra high and threatened to get us a little wet, after it flooded the neighboring pit out. So my daughter and I took the shovel (that you bring to turn over the ashes) and dug a bit of a channel, in the dark, to direct the water over a bit.

    I would have loved to go to the beach this summer. I did go to a beach in the Puget Sound but it was rocky and the tide was out so it smelled awful. It wasn't the same as a refreshing, salty breeze with your toes in the sand. ;)

  "The Four Ages of Poetry," by Thomas Love Peacock I am becoming fond of Thomas Love Peacock.  Besides his unbeatable name, he was a lot of fun.  Peacock was a minor literary figure of the early 19th century; he tried his hand at poetry but mainly succeeded in satire.  I read his short novel Nightmare Abbey last year, but at the time I didn't know that the young hero of the story, Scythrop, was modeled on Peacock's good friend Percy Shelley.  He and Shelley were quite close and Peacock was the executor of Shelley's will. A few short stories in Urdu

 Back in August, I got hold of a book of Urdu short stories translated into English.  It's a large book, so I wanted to read just the women authors for WIT, and that would still be a good amount.  August got away from me, and I only read one or two stories back then, but I've continued reading them since.  I've now finished all the short stories in the book that were written by women (luckily for me, there are short biographies in an appendix, since I could only tell from the name about half the time).  I'll just highlight a couple: "The Wagon," by Khalida Asghar, is a hallucinatory, apocalyptic story.  The narrator meets three strange men who are watching the evening sky and point out that it has become red.  No one had noticed until they said so, but the sky is now strangely red.  Then a smell arrives, so offensive and sickening that it causes real pain -- but only once it's pointed out.  And finally, a mysterious wagon, which may be the source of the s
