Dickens is a bit too heavy on the melodrama sometime. So far I've read the entire Barchester Chronicles, plus the first of the Pallisers (excellent!) and a bunch of stand-alone novels. If you don't want to dive right into another series, my favorite stand-alone novels were The American Senator; Rachel Ray (fairly short); Ayala's Angel; and The Way We Live Now, which is considered his masterpiece. <br /><br />I can't decide if I should read a stand-alone next or go back to the Pallisers.
